What is in the London Television Archive?

The London Television Archive is one of the largest London themed television archives in the world. Predominantly covering London and its surrounding areas, practically every area and facet of this great city’s life is covered and captured on film and tape. The biggest collection in the archive is The Channel One London News Archive from the 1990’s. Therefore the archive is particularly strong in news items and current affairs programmes from the nineties. However the archive also extensively covers London stock shots, sports, entertainment, the arts, and fashion up to the present day.

Can I view before purchasing?

The London Television Archive can provide a viewing copy (screener) on VHS, DVD, or Digital Video File of specific items of interest. There is no royalty charge for this service but the service does incur technical charges. When you've chosen the clips you want to use, just contact The London Television Archive to arrange a licence and payment.

What are your rates?

As each project/production is different we do not publish our rate card. Pricing depends on several key factors:

  • How the footage will be used: TV, feature film, corporate video, multimedia application, etc.
  • Territories in which the production/product will be shown
  • Duration period of the licence required
  • How much footage is being used.

Are there restrictions on how I can use the London archive footage?

The London Television Archive is able to grant worldwide licenses for all the material that it owns or represents. From time to time, there will be a few exceptions and any restrictions relating to a particular piece of footage will be highlighted on the relevant shotlist provided.

What does "shotlist" mean?

This is a list, often in great detail, of what the footage actually contains, shot by shot. This helps researchers and producers decide whether or not the material is what they are looking for and allows them to find particular scenes quickly and efficiently.

Do you have a stills service?

The London Television Archive has a large range of stills covering all aspects of London.
